Coast FIRE is the point where your current savings, left to grow untouched, will reach financial independence on their own — no more contributions required. Find your Coast FIRE age below.
Coast FIRE is the amount you need invested today so that compound growth alone — with zero additional contributions — grows into your full financial independence number by your target retirement age. Once you hit it, saving for retirement becomes optional: you only need to cover your current living costs, because your investments are already coasting to the finish line.
We work backward from your FI number using your expected return: how much would need to be invested now to compound, untouched, into that number by your target age? That's your Coast number. Compare it with your savings today to see exactly how far you are from coasting.
Your full FI number is your annual spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate. At a 4% withdrawal rate, that's spending × 25 — the amount that historically supports indefinite withdrawals from a diversified portfolio.
This calculator uses real, inflation-adjusted returns, so every figure is in today's purchasing power. A 5% real return roughly corresponds to an 8% nominal return with 3% inflation, close to the long-run history of a stock-heavy portfolio.
