Your FIRE number is the amount invested that lets you cover your spending forever. Enter your numbers to see yours, and the exact age you're projected to reach it.
FIRE — Financial Independence, Retire Early — is reached when your invested portfolio can safely cover your annual spending indefinitely. The standard rule of thumb multiplies annual spending by 25, equivalent to a 4% safe withdrawal rate.
Withdraw 4% of the portfolio the first year, then adjust that dollar amount for inflation each year after. Historical backtests of diversified stock/bond portfolios show this has held up over most 30-year periods — though it's a guideline, not a guarantee, and many people now use a lower or dynamic withdrawal rate for a margin of safety.
The projection then compounds your savings each year: next year's net worth = this year's × (1 + r) + annual savings, where r is your expected real return — until the total crosses your FIRE number.
If your full FIRE number feels far off, check your Coast FIRE age instead — the point where your current savings alone, left to grow, will get you there without saving another dollar.
This calculator uses real (inflation-adjusted) returns so every figure is in today's purchasing power. A 5% real return roughly corresponds to an 8% nominal return with 3% inflation.
